Frequently Asked Questions About Studying at The University of Debrecen

All of the courses for both the medical and dental programs are taught completely in English. However, as part of the curriculum, students are required to take Hungarian language courses to best communicate with the patients.

The University of Debrecen is recognized throughout the world, including Canada and the United States. Education at Debrecen Medical School is accredited by the World Health Organization, US Department of Education, The State Education Department (NY, USA), Medical Board of California, the General Medicine Council of United Kingdom, Medical Councils of Israel, Ireland, Iran and Norway. In most European countries – not listed above – and also in India the diploma of the University of Debrecen, Medical and Health Science Center is accepted for registration purposes; however a qualifying exam is compulsory.

The University of Debrecen Medical School is listed in the International Medical Education Directory (IMED), which means that graduates are able to attend the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination (MCCEE). The University’s recognition includes but not limited to the following:

– Provincial Student Assistance Program of Canada (all provinces i.e. OSAP for Ontario) (Scholarships & Loans)

Debrecen is the second largest city in Hungary after Budapest. Debrecen is the regional center of the Northern Great Plain region and the seat of Hajdú-Bihar County. Debrecen is located on the Great Hungarian Plain, 220 km (137 mi) east of Budapest. The population is about 200,000 of which many are students.

Medical Program: 6 Years
Dental Program: 5 years
Pharmacy Program: 5 years

Prospective students are required to fill out the application found on our website (www.dmea.ca). Upon completion and submission, you will be contacted within a few business days if you are a viable candidate for the applied program. If approved, you will be required to sit for an entrance examination or an interview depending on your credentials.

Exams and interviews are hosted in Toronto, Canada.

Basic Medicine Course (Premedical Studies)
Basic Medical Course I (BMC I – September to December): 7,000 USD Basic Medical Course II (BMC II) – January to June): 7,000 USD

Medicine Program
The tuition fee for the 1st year of the Medicine Program is 16 900 USD if the total yearly tuition fee is paid in one installment before registration to the first semester.

The tuition fee can be paid in two installments:9 500 USD is due before registration in September and 8 400 USD has to be paid before registration to the second semester in February (totally 17 900 USD).

Dentistry
The tuition fee for the 1st year of the Dentistry Program is 16 000 USD if the total yearly tuition fee is paid in one installment before registration to the first semester.

The tuition fee can be paid in two installments: 9 100 USD is due before registration in September and 7 900 USD has to be paid before registration to the second semester in February (totally 17 000 USD). Material cost: in addition to the tuition fee 2 200 USD yearly (or 1200 USD/semester) material cost must be paid from the 3rd year on that is due before registration to the semester.

Pharmacy
The tuition fee for the 1st year of the Pharmacy Program is 8 000 USD. The tuition fee can be paid in two installments: 4 700 USD is due before registration in September and 3 300 USD has to be paid before registration to the second semester in February (totally 8 000 USD).

Note: The following fees are included in the tuition fee of the above Programs (of the University of Debrecen):
– Registration fee
– Summer practice fee
– Costs of lecture book and student ID cards
– Insurance fee
– Medical examination fee
Additional fees that apply to all programs:
– Application fee: 150 USD
– Entrance examination fee: 350 USD

The Medical School serves as the city hospital for Debrecen; therefore students of upper terms may also obtain their clinical training here.

Canadian students can apply for provincial loans such as Ontario Student Assistant Program (OSAP) in Ontario. The Medical School of Debrecen is listed among the universities acknowledged by OSAP.
